Biography
Abdul Rahman Baba, known as Baba Rahman, is a Ghanaian professional footballer born on 2 July 1994 in Tamale, Ghana. A speedy and attacking left-back, Rahman has become one of Ghana's leading defensive players over the past decade. He started his professional career in Ghana's domestic leagues before moving to European football, where he played for some of the continent's top clubs.
Rahman began his football career with Dreams FC in Ghana before moving to Asante Kotoko, one of the country's most successful clubs, where he played in the Ghanaian Premier League. His domestic performances attracted European scouts, leading to his move to German football in 2012 with Bundesliga side Greuther Fürth. During his two seasons with Fürth, Rahman adjusted to the faster pace and greater tactical demands of German football, honing the technical skills that later drew the attention of top clubs.
After his time at Greuther Fürth, Rahman joined FC Augsburg, another Bundesliga club, where he continued to grow as a professional. His consistent performances in Germany's top league built his reputation as a dependable defender with strong attacking abilities from the left side. This led Chelsea to sign him in 2015 for an initial fee of £14 million, with potential add-ons bringing the total to £22 million, making him one of the most expensive Ghanaian players at the time.
Internationally, Rahman debuted for the Ghana national team in 2014 and quickly became a regular. He was selected for Ghana's 2015 Africa Cup of Nations campaign, where the team reached the final but lost to Ivory Coast in a penalty shootout. Rahman also played in Ghana's squad for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations, maintaining his role as the main left-back. Now playing for PAOK in the Super League Greece, Rahman continues to compete at the highest level for both club and country.
Before Fame
Before achieving international fame, Rahman grew up in Tamale, a city in northern Ghana known for producing talented footballers. His early years matched a time when Ghanaian football was on the rise, thanks to expanding youth development programs that helped young players reach professional levels. The success of Ghanaian players in European leagues during the 2000s and early 2010s led to increased scouting interest in the country's domestic competitions.
Rahman's rise started within Ghana's local football system, beginning with Dreams FC before moving to the more established Asante Kotoko. This journey through Ghana's football system was common for players of his generation, who benefited from better coaching standards and greater international exposure of Ghanaian football following the national team's strong performances at the World Cups in 2006 and 2010.
