Biography
Paulina Susana Rubio Dosamantes was born on June 17, 1971, in Mexico City, Mexico. She first became well-known as part of the hugely popular Mexican pop group Timbiriche, which she joined at the age of eleven in 1982. The group was one of the big names in Latin pop during the 1980s, and Rubio stayed with them until 1991, honing her singing and performance skills over nearly a decade.
After leaving Timbiriche, Rubio started her solo career with the album 'La Chica Dorada' in 1992. This album earned her the nickname 'The Golden Girl,' which became an essential part of her image. Success continued with '24 Kilates' in 1993, making her the top-selling Mexican female artist for EMI Latin. In the mid-1990s, she tried out dance and electronic music styles with 'El Tiempo Es Oro' (1995) and 'Planeta Paulina' (1996), and appeared in the film 'Bésame en la Boca' (1995).
Her self-titled album 'Paulina' released in 2000 marked a comeback after a short break. The album was a hit internationally and made her the top-selling Latin music artist according to Billboard in 2001. She kept the success going with 'Border Girl' (2002), her attempt to enter English-language markets, and 'Pau-Latina' (2004), both receiving praise and Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations.
In the 2000s and 2010s, Rubio released more successful albums like 'Ananda' (2006), 'Gran City Pop' (2009), and 'Brava!' (2011), with the last one featuring electronic dance music. She also expanded into television, working as a coach on talent shows like 'La Voz... Mexico' in 2012 and 'La Voz Kids' in 2013, and as a judge on 'The X Factor'. Over her career of more than 30 years, she has sold over 15 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling Latin music artists ever.
Before Fame
Rubio was born in Mexico City, surrounded by the entertainment industry, and grew up during the 1980s when Latin pop was really taking off. She joined Timbiriche at eleven, just as manufactured pop groups were becoming hugely popular across Latin America. This was also when Spanish-language TV and music were expanding, giving young artists like her opportunities that earlier generations didn't have.
Throughout the 1980s, Timbiriche's success gave Rubio a lot of hands-on experience in recording, touring, and media appearances while she was still young. This early experience in professional music production and exposure to international markets uniquely prepared her for solo success as Latin pop started gaining global attention in the early 1990s.
