Biography
José Pedro Castillo Terrones was born on October 19, 1969, in Puña, Cajamarca, Peru, in a poor peasant family. As a teenager, he worked informal jobs to pay for his education and eventually studied at the Octavio Matta Contreras Higher Pedagogical Institute and later at César Vallejo University. He went back to his home area to work as a primary school teacher, dedicating many years to educating children in rural communities with limited resources and infrastructure. His firsthand experience with rural poverty and educational inequality became the driving force for his entry into national politics.
Before Fame
Castillo spent most of his adult life teaching elementary school in rural Cajamarca, far from Peru's political hub in Lima. He gained national attention in 2017 as a key organizer and leader of a major teachers' strike against the government's education policies and pay conditions. This strike made him well-known among working-class and rural Peruvians who often felt overlooked by the country's political leaders. Seeing his students struggle with limited resources in rural Peru, Castillo decided to run for president in the 2021 election, representing the socialist Free Peru party.
