Biography
Peter Machajdík (born 1 June 1961, Bratislava, Slovakia) is a Slovak composer, pianist, performer, and sound artist known for his work in chamber, orchestral, electronic, choral, and theatre music. He is recognized as one of Slovakia's unique voices in contemporary classical and experimental music, with pieces that thoughtfully address social and ethical issues of today. His music offers a counterbalance to violence, intolerance, and greed, characterized by a keen ear for instrumental color and texture.
Machajdík attended the University of Economics in Bratislava, which gave him a different background than many of his conservatory-trained peers. Despite this non-traditional route, he dedicated himself doggedly to music. During the 1990s, he took part in seminars with leading European new music figures like Vinko Globokar, Karlheinz Stockhausen, Clarence Barlow, and Konrad Boehmer. In 1992, he joined the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program, which provided him an opportunity to engage with the wider international contemporary music scene.
His work encompasses nearly all genres: orchestral, band music, choral, chamber music, solo instrument pieces, piano and organ compositions, and religious music including hymns. Apart from regular notation, Machajdík has created graphic notations, notably the Dialogue with... series, integrating letters from fellow composers, adding visual elements that allow the letters themselves to become part of the performance. Other works like Wold focus solely on visuals, while pieces such as Donauklang include notation or text detailing performance elements.
His orchestral works have been performed by major groups such as the Janáček Philharmonic Orchestra, the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Nordwestdeutsche Philharmonie, the Pomeranian Philharmonic, Capella Istropolitana, and Camerata Europea, among others. He has also worked with artists from outside classical music, including Jon Anderson of Yes and harpist Floraleda Sacchi. His music is published by Musica Slovaca, Alea Publishing, Zimbel Press, and Edition Hudba. In 2006, he was awarded the Ján Levoslav Bella Prize, an important Slovak music composition award. In addition to composing and performing, Machajdík teaches at a university.
Before Fame
Peter Machajdík was born in Bratislava on 1 June 1961, when Czechoslovakia was under communist rule. During this time, cultural expression was tightly controlled by the state, and getting access to Western avant-garde movements was hard. Despite these constraints, he developed an interest in music that led him to explore experimental and contemporary classical forms. He chose to study at the University of Economics in Bratislava instead of going to a music conservatory. This decision gave him an analytical and broad-based foundation that later influenced how he approached composing music.
When Czechoslovakia started to change politically in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Machajdík got the chance to connect more freely with the international music scene. He attended seminars with top European composers and sound experimenters, learning techniques and ideas from key figures of the postwar avant-garde. A major step in 1992 was his residency at DAAD Artists-in-Berlin. This opportunity connected him with a global network of artists and confirmed his path as a composer working across acoustic, electronic, and conceptual music styles.
