Biography
Gaius Petronius Arbiter was a Roman courtier, writer, and administrator who lived during Emperor Nero's reign, from about 27 to 66 AD. Born in Massilia (now Marseille), he became well-known in Roman society for his refined taste, writing skills, and political savvy. Petronius was called the 'judge of elegance' at Nero's court, where he greatly influenced style, entertainment, and culture. His excellent sense of luxury and aesthetics made him a key advisor to the emperor on everything from banquets to art. As part of Nero's inner circle, Petronius enjoyed great wealth and social standing, living a life of planned indulgence that would later influence his writing. His most famous work is the Satyricon, a satirical novel critiquing the moral decline and social pretensions of Roman society. The novel, a mix of prose and verse, follows characters through the shady areas of the Roman Empire, highlighting the corruption, excess, and hypocrisy of the time. Petronius was skilled at capturing the everyday speech of various social groups and creating vivid scenes that showed the gap between Roman ideals and reality. His downfall was due to court politics and Nero's growing paranoia. Accused of treason by a rival, Tigellinus, Petronius was sentenced to death but chose to take his own life in 66 AD at Cumae. In typical style, he spent his last hours hosting a dinner party, calmly opening and bandaging his veins while discussing poetry and light subjects with friends, purposely avoiding any deep thoughts about death.
Before Fame
Not much is known about Petronius's early life in Massilia, but coming from a province probably gave him a distinct view of Roman society that influenced his writing. The bustling port city of Massilia, with its Greek roots and trade connections, exposed him to various cultures and social classes, shaping his views on human nature. He started gaining recognition in the early years of Nero's rule, as the young emperor liked to have cultured people around to add sophistication to his court. Petronius's natural elegance, along with his writing skills and appreciation of luxury, quickly set him apart from the other courtiers seeking the emperor's attention.
