Biography

Pola Negri, originally named Barbara Apolonia Chałupiec, was born on January 3, 1897, in Lipno, in what was then the Congress Kingdom of Poland. She was a Polish stage and film actress and singer who gained international fame during the silent film era. Her early years were tough; after her father was deported to Siberia, she grew up in poverty with her mother and battled tuberculosis as a teenager. Once she recovered, she pursued ballet and acting in Warsaw, eventually becoming a well-known stage performer before shifting her focus to film.

In 1917, Negri moved to Germany and started her film career with the Berlin-based UFA studio. Her work caught the eye of Paramount Pictures in Hollywood, and in 1922 she signed a contract with them, becoming the first European actress to have a direct contract with a Hollywood film company. During the 1920s, she acted in many American silent films, building a reputation as a seductive femme fatale and becoming one of the most well-known stars. Her personal life also drew significant public attention, including her romance with Rudolph Valentino and marriage to Georgian prince Serge Mdivani.

The switch to sound films in the late 1920s and early 1930s was tough for many silent-film actors, and Negri returned to Europe, continuing her career with films for Pathé Films and UFA. She also started a singing career during this period. Her career in Europe became complicated as Nazi Germany rose to power, so she eventually moved back to the United States. She made just two films after 1940, with her last screen appearance in Disney's The Moon-Spinners in 1964.

Negri became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1951 and spent her later years in San Antonio, Texas, mostly staying out of the public eye. She was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and received a German Film Award, recognizing her work in both American and European cinema. She passed away on August 1, 1987, in San Antonio at the age of 90 from pneumonia related to a brain tumor for which she declined treatment.

Before Fame

Pola Negri was born into poverty in Lipno, Poland, and grew up facing challenges after her father was exiled to Siberia. Her mother struggled to support the family alone, adding to their hardships. As a teenager, Pola battled tuberculosis, which almost stopped her ambitions completely. However, she recovered and focused on ballet and acting training in Warsaw. Her determination and talent helped her make a name for herself in the Polish theatrical scene, and she became a respected stage actress.

In 1917, she moved to Germany, and that decision changed her life, taking her from a local stage actress to an international film star. Germany's growing silent film industry, centered around UFA in Berlin, highlighted her expressive presence on screen. She frequently collaborated with director Ernst Lubitsch on films that received wide distribution and critical acclaim. This success in Germany caught Hollywood's attention and led to her groundbreaking contract with Paramount Pictures.
