Biography

Miroslav Josef Klose, born on June 9, 1978, in Opole, Poland, became one of the top strikers in international football history. The German forward reached legendary status by becoming the all-time leading goalscorer in FIFA World Cup tournaments, scoring 16 goals across four World Cups from 2002 to 2014. His professional career lasted nearly two decades, where he proved himself as a sharp shooter and smart positional player for both club and country.

Klose started his professional career with FC 08 Homburg, then moved to Kaiserslautern, gaining fame at Werder Bremen. His outstanding performances in the Bundesliga won him the German Footballer of the Year award in 2006, and he claimed the European Golden Shoe that year as well. At Bremen, he became one of the league's top scorers, making the kicker Bundesliga Team of the Season in 2004-05 and 2005-06. This success led to his transfer to Bayern Munich in 2007, where he won Bundesliga titles in 2007-08 and 2009-10.

In 2011, Klose made a surprising move to Serie A by joining Lazio, where he spent the last five years of his playing career. Despite being in the later years of his career, he still delivered top performances and helped Lazio win the 2012-13 Coppa Italia. He retired from professional football in 2016 after a fruitful time in Italy, showing his ability to adapt to different leagues and playing styles.

Klose's international career with Germany was remarkable, featuring in four World Cups and multiple European Championships. He played a key role in Germany's 2014 World Cup win in Brazil, surpassing Ronaldo's previous record of 15 World Cup goals. During his international career, he also was a runner-up at the 2002 World Cup, achieved third place in 2006 and 2010, and reached the Euro 2008 final. After retiring, Klose transitioned to coaching and continues his football career as head coach of 1. FC Nürnberg, receiving accolades like the UEFA President's Award in 2023.

Before Fame

Born in Opole to Polish parents, Klose moved to Germany as a child and grew up in a working-class setting. Initially, he pursued a career in carpentry. His route to professional football was unusual, as he started playing organized football later than most and worked as a carpenter while honing his skills in amateur leagues. Unlike many professional players who join youth academies early, Klose's rise to prominence began only when he joined FC 08 Homburg's senior team.

During the late 1990s and early 2000s, German football was shifting from a purely physical style to one that was more technical and tactical. Klose emerged during this change, combining the traditional German work ethic with improved technical skills. This new generation of German players ultimately achieved World Cup success in 2014.
