Biography

Rached Ghannouchi was born on June 22, 1941, in El Hamma, a small town in southern Tunisia when it was under French colonial rule. His birth name was Rashad Khriji. He attended several well-known institutions for higher education, including Ez-Zitouna University in Tunis, Cairo University, Damascus University, and the University of Paris. During his studies, he encountered a variety of philosophical and political ideas, which influenced his blend of Islamic political theory and democratic principles. This blend defined his career and sparked both admiration and controversy.

Before Fame

Growing up in post-colonial Tunisia under the secular authoritarian rule of President Habib Bourguiba, Ghannouchi matured in a society that was rapidly modernizing, which many traditionalists saw as culturally alienating. His studies across the Arab world and Europe exposed him to pan-Arabism, leftist movements, and Islamic revivalist ideas, all of which shaped his intellectual growth. By the late 1960s and 1970s, he had become a leading voice arguing for an Islam that aligns with political pluralism and human rights, putting him at odds with the Tunisian state.
