Biography

Jerry John Rawlings was a military officer, aviator, and politician from Ghana who led the country for almost twenty years, becoming its longest-serving leader. Born on 22 June 1947 in Accra, Rawlings rose through the ranks of the Ghana Air Force as a flight lieutenant and started his political career through military coups. His first attempt to take power on 15 May 1979 was unsuccessful, but he succeeded with a second coup later that year, briefly taking control before handing power to a civilian government. On 31 December 1981, Rawlings overthrew the democratically elected government and set up the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC), beginning his lengthy rule.

From 1981 to 1993, during his military regime, Rawlings initiated major economic and social changes while keeping an authoritarian grip. His leadership was a mix of populist charm and strict military discipline, gaining both supporters who liked his anti-corruption stance and critics of his authoritarian ways. In 1992, recognizing a worldwide move toward democracy, Rawlings stepped down from the military and founded the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to join Ghana’s shift to multi-party democracy.

Rawlings won the 1992 presidential election, becoming the first president of Ghana’s Fourth Republic, and was re-elected in 1996, serving two terms until 2001. His presidency marked Ghana’s move from military rule to stable democratic governance, setting up institutions and practices that still influence Ghanaian politics today. Beyond domestic affairs, Rawlings played a key role in regional diplomacy, notably helping broker a ceasefire in 1995 during the First Liberian Civil War and later working as an African Union envoy to Somalia.

Rawlings married Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings and received many international honors throughout his career, including the Order of Jamaica, Order of José Martí, and the Gold Olympic Order. After his presidency, he stayed active in Ghanaian and African politics until he passed away on 12 November 2020 at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital at age 73. The government gave him a state funeral to honor his major role in shaping modern Ghana.

Before Fame

Jerry Rawlings went to Achimota School, one of Ghana's top schools, before joining the Ghana Air Force. There, he trained as a pilot and became a flight lieutenant. His early military career happened during a time when Ghana faced political instability, with economic troubles and frequent changes in government caused by both elections and military actions.

In the late 1970s, Ghana was dealing with economic problems, corruption, and political disappointment. These conditions eventually led Rawlings to try his first coup. As a young air force officer, he saw the disconnect between military leaders and regular Ghanaians, which shaped the populist views that defined his leadership. His first failed coup attempt in May 1979 made him a symbol of resistance against the current system.
