Biography
Rana Dajani is a Jordanian molecular biologist and tenured professor at Hashemite University. She was born in Dhahran and earned her Ph.D. in molecular biology from the University of Iowa. She then pursued advanced studies at Harvard University. Her academic achievements were noted early on with awards like the Fulbright Scholarship, and most recently, she was elected as a Fellow of the International Science Council in 2023.
Dajani is a top expert on the genetics of Circassian and Chechen groups in Jordan, conducting major genome-wide studies on diabetes and cancer using stem cells. Her work in stem cell research was crucial in creating Jordan's Stem Cell Research Ethics Law and setting up regulations in this area. As president of the Society for Advancement of Science and Technology in the Arab World, she has played a key role in pushing scientific progress in the region.
Besides her research, Dajani has made big contributions to science education and policy. She has held visiting positions at well-known institutions like Yale University's Stem Cell Center and the University of Cambridge. She was also the 2019-21 Zuzana Simoniova Cmelikova Visiting Scholar at the University of Richmond's Jepson School. Her numerous achievements have earned her fellowships like the Eisenhower Fellowship and a fellowship at Harvard's Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study.
Dajani's influence goes beyond the lab with her NGO 'We Love Reading,' which encourages literacy among children in the Arab world. Through this effort, she has trained over 7,000 women to read aloud in Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria and has helped set up many libraries across Jordan. Her advocacy includes promoting women's education as a member of the United Nations Women Jordan Advisory Council. She is also a strong voice for evolutionary theory in Islamic contexts. For her work in science and society, she received Jordan's Order of Al Hussein for Distinguished Contributions of the Second Class and was named by Muslim Science Magazine as one of the most influential women scientists in the Islamic World.
Before Fame
Dajani was born in Dhahran in the early 2000s and grew up during a time when science in the Middle East was moving forward rapidly, especially in genetics and biotechnology. Her childhood years lined up with the completion of the Human Genome Project and the rise of stem cell research.
She made her name by pursuing higher education in the United States, earning a Ph.D. in molecular biology from the University of Iowa. During the early 21st century, Middle Eastern scientists had unique chances to join global research efforts, while also working on regional health issues. This included genetic studies of populations in the area that had been mostly overlooked in genomic research.
