Biography

René Emilio Barrientos Ortuño was born on May 30, 1919, in Tarata, Bolivia, and became a key political figure during Bolivia’s mid-20th century. A military officer, Barrientos advanced through the Bolivian Air Force to become a general before stepping into politics. He first gained national attention as vice president under Victor Paz Estenssoro in 1964, placing him in the middle of Bolivia's political unrest. On November 4, 1964, Barrientos took part in a military coup that overthrew President Paz Estenssoro’s government, changing Bolivia’s political direction. After the coup, he initially shared power with General Alfredo Ovando as co-president of a military junta from 1964 to 1965, starting a new authoritarian rule that promised stability. Barrientos later seized full control and was the sole president from 1966 until his death in 1969, becoming Bolivia's 47th president. His leadership was noted for its strong anti-communist stance and military crackdown on leftist movements, especially in the fight against Che Guevara's guerrillas in 1967. Under Barrientos, the Bolivian military tracked down and dismantled Guevara’s forces, with Guevara captured and executed in October 1967. This success against international communist efforts gained Barrientos attention from the United States and other anti-communist nations during the Cold War peak. His governance was marked by authoritarianism, economic policies that favored foreign investors, and the oppression of labor unions and leftist groups. Barrientos' presidency ended suddenly on April 27, 1969, when he died in a helicopter crash near Arque, Bolivia, on his way to a political rally in Cochabamba. There have been ongoing controversies about his death, with some speculating it was an assassination, though no definitive proof has surfaced.

Before Fame

Barrientos was born into a modest family in the small town of Tarata and pursued a military career by enrolling in Bolivia's military academy. He was particularly skilled in aviation and became a pilot in the Bolivian Air Force, climbing the ranks during a time of political instability in Bolivia. His military career happened after the Chaco War and during a time when revolutionary movements were changing Latin American politics. The 1952 Bolivian Revolution had brought the MNR (Nationalist Revolutionary Movement) government, led by Victor Paz Estenssoro, to power. However, by the early 1960s, economic problems and political tensions opened the door for military intervention, paving the way for Barrientos' eventual rise to power.
