Biography
Roman Dmitriyevich Protasevich was born on 5 May 1995 in Minsk, Belarus. He got his early education at the Lyceum of the Belarusian National Technical University and later studied journalism at the Belarusian State University. His education in journalism played a key role in his future as a political activist and media personality.
Protasevich became well-known as a blogger and political activist, taking on the role of editor-in-chief at the Telegram channel Nexta, a key opposition media outlet in Belarus. He was also the chief editor of the Telegram channel Belarus of the Brain. These channels were important sources of information and organization for the Belarusian opposition, especially during times of political unrest against Alexander Lukashenko.
On 23 May 2021, Protasevich was at the heart of an international incident when Ryanair Flight 4978, on which he was traveling with his girlfriend Sofia Sapega, was forced to land at Minsk airport on orders from President Lukashenko. The Belarusian authorities claimed a false bomb threat to justify rerouting the flight. Protasevich and Sapega were arrested upon landing, leading to widespread international backlash and diplomatic issues.
After his arrest, Protasevich underwent legal proceedings in Belarus. On 3 May 2023, he was sentenced to eight years in prison. However, his time behind bars was brief, as he was pardoned by President Lukashenko on 22 May 2023. Questions arose about possible coercion or deals during his detention. Lukashenko later accused Protasevich of working for the Belarusian intelligence agency KGB, adding more controversy to a case that highlighted issues of press freedom and human rights in Belarus.
Before Fame
Growing up in post-Soviet Belarus, Protasevich experienced increasing authoritarianism under Alexander Lukashenko's extended rule. He studied at the Lyceum of the Belarusian National Technical University and later at the Faculty of Journalism at Belarusian State University, placing him in the country's media scene during a time when independent journalism faced mounting pressure.
The growth of digital media platforms and encrypted messaging services like Telegram opened up new ways for opposition voices to be heard in authoritarian countries. Protasevich became involved in digital activism and independent journalism just as traditional media outlets in Belarus were under tighter state control and censorship, making alternative platforms vital for dissenting voices and independent news coverage.
