Biography

Keith Rupert Murdoch was born on March 11, 1931, in Melbourne, Australia. His family was already involved in the media world. His father, Keith Murdoch, was a well-known journalist and newspaper executive who had a big impact on Rupert's career. Rupert went to Geelong Grammar School, then studied politics and economics at Worcester College, University of Oxford, which later influenced his business decisions.

When his father passed away in 1952, Murdoch took over The News, a small newspaper in Adelaide. This was the start of what would become one of the world's largest media empires. In the 1950s and 1960s, he bought more newspapers in Australia and New Zealand, showing an early talent for finding undervalued media businesses and turning them around. He often bought struggling publications, cut costs, and changed their focus to gain a bigger market share.

Murdoch's international growth really took off in 1969 when he bought the News of the World in the UK, followed by The Sun. These purchases were key to his shift from a regional publisher in Australia to a global media owner. In 1974, he moved to New York City to explore the American market but still kept significant interests in his starting regions. In the US, he bought the New York Post and later The Wall Street Journal, making him a significant player in American journalism.

The 1980s were a time of fast expansion for Murdoch. In 1985, he became a naturalized American citizen, giving up his Australian citizenship to follow US rules on owning TV networks. This allowed him to buy major American TV assets and led to the creation of the Fox Broadcasting Company. His company, News Corporation, kept buying aggressively, acquiring Twentieth Century Fox in 1985, HarperCollins Publishers in 1989, and many other media outlets across the world. By the early 21st century, Murdoch had built a global media conglomerate with newspapers, TV networks, film studios, and digital platforms, making him one of the most influential media figures worldwide.

Before Fame

Murdoch's rise to media prominence was heavily influenced by his family and the circumstances of his inheritance. His father, Keith Murdoch, was a respected journalist and media executive in Australia, providing Murdoch with industry knowledge and valuable connections. When Keith Murdoch died unexpectedly in 1952, his 21-year-old son had to take control of the family's media holdings while still finishing his education at Oxford.

After World War II, Australia offered unique opportunities for ambitious media entrepreneurs. The growing economy and expanding suburbs increased demand for local news, while advances in printing and distribution made newspaper publishing more efficient and profitable. Murdoch noticed these trends early and positioned himself to take advantage of the changing media scene, using his inherited Adelaide newspaper as a platform to systematically expand across the Australian market.
