Biography
Ruslan Shamilevich Chagaev was born on October 19, 1978, in Andijan, Uzbekistan. He is a former professional boxer who fought from 2001 to 2016, holding the World Boxing Association heavyweight title twice. He made history as the first Asian boxer to win a world heavyweight title recognized by any of the four major sanctioning bodies, which brought him widespread recognition both in Uzbekistan and internationally.
Chagaev's journey to becoming a professional was unusual. He briefly turned professional in 1997 but then returned to amateur boxing after the International Boxing Association labeled those professional bouts as exhibitions and reinstated his amateur status. As an amateur, he made his mark by winning gold at the 1999 Asian Championships in the super-heavyweight division and the 2001 World Championships in the heavyweight division. These achievements made him one of the most promising heavyweight prospects when he returned to professional boxing in 2001.
In 2007, Chagaev's career hit a high point when he defeated the unbeaten Nikolai Valuev to win the WBA heavyweight title. He defended the title twice, but injuries stopped him from having a rematch with Valuev, leading the WBA to take the title from him in 2009. That year, he faced his first professional loss to unified heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko. Despite this setback, Chagaev stayed a top contender, appearing in The Ring magazine's top ten heavyweight rankings every year from 2006 to 2015, reaching third place in 2008, just behind Wladimir and Vitali Klitschko.
Chagaev reclaimed the WBA title in 2014 with a Regular title win over Fres Oquendo. He defended it once but lost to Lucas Browne in 2016. Browne later failed a drug test, and the WBA temporarily reinstated Chagaev as champion. However, he was stripped of the title again in July 2016 for not paying sanctioning fees. On July 28, 2016, he retired from professional boxing due to ongoing eye injuries that made competition unsafe.
Throughout his career and afterwards, Chagaev received significant recognition from the Uzbek government and other bodies. He was awarded the Order of El-yurt hurmati in 2001 and the Order of Outstanding Merit in 2007, and he holds the titles of Honored Athlete of Uzbekistan and The Pride of Uzbekistan. He also received the Medal for Merit to the Chechen Republic, showing his cultural ties within the region.
Before Fame
Ruslan Chagaev grew up in Andijan, a city in the Fergana Valley of Uzbekistan, during a time of major political and social change after the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991. Uzbekistan continued to produce skilled athletes thanks to the sports programs left by the Soviet system, with boxing remaining popular in the country. Chagaev grew up in this environment and became a strong heavyweight contender in the mid-1990s.
After briefly trying professional boxing in 1997, Chagaev returned to the amateur scene when the AIBA declared his professional fights as exhibitions and let him compete as an amateur again. This second amateur phase was very successful. He won gold at the 1999 Asian Championships and then secured a World Championship gold medal in 2001, establishing himself as one of Asia's top heavyweight boxers and paving the way for a steady professional career.
