Biography
Sachchidananda Sinha was born on November 10, 1871, in Arrah, in what is now the Shahabad district of Bihar, India. He studied at Patna College and Patna University, then went to England to study law and become a barrister. His legal training gave him the analytical and speaking skills that shaped his public career in law, politics, journalism, and education in the years to come.
Before Fame
Growing up in the latter half of the nineteenth century, Sinha was part of a time of major intellectual and political change in colonial India. The educated Indian middle class was starting to assert itself through fields like law and journalism, and organizations like the Indian National Congress were starting to provide a platform for political expression. Sinha's upbringing in Bihar, which was then part of the Bengal Presidency, showed him the specific challenges faced by Bihari people who felt ignored within the larger provincial setup. This understanding drove his lifelong dedication to advocating for a separate Bihar state and the development of its institutions.
