Biography

Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel was born on October 31, 1875, in Nadiad, Gujarat, to a farming family. Despite his modest background, he showed remarkable determination in pursuing education and law. After working as a lawyer in local courts, Patel saved enough money to go to England, where he studied at the Middle Temple and City Law School, becoming a barrister in 1913. When he returned to India, he set up a successful legal practice in Ahmedabad, becoming one of Gujarat's top lawyers.

Patel got into politics through his connection with Mahatma Gandhi during the Kheda Satyagraha of 1918, where he organized farmers against harsh taxes. His ability to organize people and his strong commitment to non-violence earned him the title 'Sardar' (chief). He later led successful movements in Borsad and Bardoli. The Bardoli campaign brought him national fame when farmers refused to pay increased land taxes. His knack for rallying people while keeping them disciplined made him a crucial part of the Indian National Congress.

As an important figure in the independence movement, Patel was Congress President in 1931 and played major roles in campaigns like the Quit India Movement of 1942. His speech at Gowalia Tank in Bombay on August 7, 1942, inspired over 100,000 people and was key in building support for the movement. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, he was the Congress party's main organizer and fundraiser, handling candidate selection and funding for vital elections.

After India gained independence in 1947, Patel became the country's first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister. His most notable achievement was the integration of 562 princely states into the Indian Union, a task many thought impossible. Using diplomacy, economic incentives, and when needed, force, he successfully brought almost all princely states into the union within two years. His tough stance during the Hyderabad crisis in 1948, where he allowed military action against the Nizam's forces, showed his commitment to national unity. Patel passed away on December 15, 1950, in Mumbai, and was awarded the Bharat Ratna posthumously in 1991.

Before Fame

Patel grew up in rural Gujarat during British colonial rule, in a farming family that believed in hard work and education despite having little money. He started off as a village accountant and then worked as a pleader in local courts, all while helping to support his family. His goal to become a barrister inspired him to save money for years before heading to England at the age of 36.

In early 20th century India, nationalist feelings were on the rise, and new forms of political resistance were developing. The partition of Bengal in 1905 and the Swadeshi movement had stirred political awareness across the country. During this time, Patel came across Gandhi's philosophy of satyagraha, which changed him from a successful lawyer into one of India's most effective political organizers.
