Biography

Sathya Sai Baba was born as Ratnakaram Sathyanarayana Raju on November 23, 1926, in Puttaparthi, a village in the Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh, India. At 14, he announced he was the reincarnation of Shirdi Sai Baba, a revered 19th-century saint, and left home to follow his spiritual path. This declaration started a religious movement that eventually gathered millions of followers worldwide.

During his lifetime, Sathya Sai Baba's devotees believed he performed many miracles, such as creating vibhuti (sacred ash), jewelry, and other objects out of thin air. They also credited him with healing the sick, performing resurrections, clairvoyance, and being in two places simultaneously. These claimed supernatural abilities were central to his appeal and solidified his reputation as a divine figure among believers.

Aside from his spiritual work, Sathya Sai Baba was involved in extensive charity efforts. He set up schools, hospitals, and water projects across India, especially targeting rural and underserved communities. His organization founded the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Learning, several specialty hospitals that offered free medical care, and projects that provided clean drinking water to many villages.

Despite his large following and charitable endeavors, Sathya Sai Baba was surrounded by controversy throughout his life. Critics and former followers accused him of using tricks to perform supposed miracles, and there were serious allegations concerning financial misconduct and abuse. However, Indian authorities never formally charged him with any crimes.

Sathya Sai Baba passed away on April 24, 2011, in Puttaparthi, the village where he was born. His death led to discussions about leadership within his movement and questions about the future of his various institutions and charitable activities. At his death, his organization claimed millions of followers around the world and ran numerous educational and healthcare facilities across India.

Before Fame

Ratnakaram Sathyanarayana Raju was born into a middle-class family in rural Andhra Pradesh when India was under British rule. His father worked as a village officer, and his mother came from a deeply religious Hindu family. As a child, he often behaved in unusual ways and claimed to have mystical experiences, which worried his parents enough to consult doctors and religious figures.

The young boy's transformation into Sathya Sai Baba happened while India was fighting for independence, a time when spiritual and cultural revival movements were spreading across the country. He declared himself the reincarnation of Shirdi Sai Baba during a period when many Indians were looking for spiritual guidance and a sense of national identity, creating a supportive environment for new religious movements to grow.
