Biography
Asafa Powell CD, born on November 23, 1982, in Spanish Town, Jamaica, is a retired sprinter known for his dominance in the 100-meter sprint during the mid-2000s. Powell made his mark as one of the fastest men by setting the 100-meter world record twice between June 2005 and May 2008, first with a time of 9.77 seconds and then improving it to 9.74 seconds. His personal best of 9.72 seconds ranks fourth on the all-time list for men's 100-meter performances, and he was the first man to break the 9.80-second barrier in the event.
Powell showed remarkable consistency in elite competition, breaking the 10-second barrier 97 times by September 2016, more than any other athlete. Besides the 100 meters, he also set the world record for the 100-yard dash with a time of 9.07 seconds, achieved on May 27, 2010, in Ostrava, Czech Republic. His Olympic career included the 2004, 2008, and 2012 Games, where he finished fifth twice and eighth once due to a groin injury during the 2012 race. However, he excelled in relay events, becoming the Olympic champion in the 4×100 meters relay in 2016.
At the World Championships, Powell won several medals, including bronze in the 100 meters at both the 2007 Osaka and 2009 Berlin championships. He also took home relay medals, winning silver in the 4×100 meters at the 2007 championships and gold at the 2009 championships. His achievements also include victories at the Commonwealth Games, where he won twice and earned a silver medal, and he claimed victory five times at the IAAF World Athletics Final.
Powell's career faced a major hurdle in 2013 when he tested positive for the stimulant oxilofrine along with teammate Sherone Simpson. They both professed their innocence and stepped away from the 2013 World Athletics Championships. Initially, they received an 18-month suspension in April 2014, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport lifted their suspensions in July 2014, finding that the positive tests were due to undisclosed oxilofrine in a supplement. For his contributions to athletics, Powell received the Commander of the Order of Distinction in 2008 and the Bislett medal in 2009.

Growing up in Spanish Town, Jamaica, Powell came into the spotlight during a time when Jamaican sprinting was at its peak, with the country taking the world stage by storm. He rose to fame in the early 2000s, a period when Jamaica started producing a remarkable group of sprinters who changed the sport forever.
Powell's journey to high-level competition matched Jamaica's growing focus on track and field programs and the building of top-notch training facilities. The cultural focus on sprinting in Jamaica, along with the island's great tradition in athletics, laid the groundwork for Powell's big break on the international scene.
