Biography
José Napoleón Duarte Fuentes was born on November 23, 1925, in Santa Ana, El Salvador, and became one of the most important and debated political figures in the country's history. After studying civil engineering at the University of Notre Dame in the United States, Duarte returned to El Salvador and started his political career as a founding member of the Christian Democratic Party (PDC). His early career showed a strong dedication to social reform and democratic governance, values that shaped his public life even as the country fell into armed conflict.
Before Fame
Duarte grew up in Santa Ana when El Salvador was controlled by a small group of wealthy landowners supported by military governments. This setup left most people in poverty with little political power. He went abroad for higher education, studying civil engineering at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. There, he learned about Catholic social teaching and democratic political ideas. These experiences influenced him to help start El Salvador's Christian Democratic Party when he returned, making him a reformist voice in a political system that was very resistant to change.
