Biography

Athinkhaya Saw Yun (c. 1299 – 5 February 1327) founded the Sagaing Kingdom in what is now Myanmar, creating a new state from the fragmented Pagan Empire. Born around 1299 in Pinle, he was the eldest son of King Thihathu, who ruled the Pinya Kingdom. Saw Yun's ambitions and his father's decisions led to a division that shaped upper Burma's politics for years.

A key moment in Saw Yun's life came when King Thihathu named Uzana I as the heir instead of him. In response, Saw Yun started a rival kingdom in 1315, centered around Sagaing. Although he nominally remained loyal to his father, he effectively ruled an area that now includes Sagaing and northern Mandalay Regions. He married Saw Hnaung of Sagaing, strengthening his connection to the land he controlled.

Saw Yun showed political and military strength in his kingdom's early years. Under Thihathu's rule, Pinya launched two small military campaigns against Sagaing to regain control, but Saw Yun successfully defended against both by 1317. These early successes helped stabilize and secure Sagaing's borders amid the region's political instability after the fall of the Pagan Empire.

After Thihathu's death, the fragile unity between Sagaing and Pinya ended. The two kingdoms formally parted ways, and Sagaing became fully independent under Saw Yun's rule. He governed from Sagaing until his death on 5 February 1327, having led the kingdom for more than a decade. His reign, though short, laid the administrative and territorial groundwork for future leaders.

Saw Yun had four children — three sons and one daughter. All his sons later ruled the Sagaing Kingdom, linking his family with the royal line. His daughter gained historical importance through her descendants, becoming the mother of Thado Minbya, who founded the Kingdom of Ava in 1364. Saw Yun's legacy continued through his children, impacting upper Burma's political landscape for the next century.

Before Fame

Saw Yun was born around 1299 in Pinle, in the interior of upper Burma. He was the eldest son of King Thihathu, who ruled the Pinya Kingdom, one of the fragmented states that emerged after the Mongol invasions sped up the decline of the Pagan Empire in the late 13th century. The political scene during his youth was marked by instability, rival royal claimants, and no unifying imperial authority.

As the eldest royal son, Saw Yun would have reasonably expected to inherit his father's throne. However, Thihathu chose Uzana I as heir, which pushed Saw Yun to change his plans. Rather than accept a lesser role in Pinya, Saw Yun aimed to establish his own authority over the Sagaing region around 1315. He used both his royal background and local political connections, including his marriage to Saw Hnaung of Sagaing, to create a separate power base.
