Biography

Saw Zein (1303–1330), also known as Saw Zeik and Binnya Ran De, was king of Martaban from 1323 to 1330. He was born in the Hanthawaddy Kingdom and rose to power after his older brother Saw O. He inherited a Mon-speaking region that had only recently broken away from foreign control. His reign was filled with ongoing internal conflict and the challenge of unifying a divided area in Lower Burma. He ruled with his wives Sanda Min Hla and May Hnin Htapi.

Despite the unrest during his rule, Saw Zein managed to bring the Mon-speaking provinces of Lower Burma back under Hanthawaddy's control. This was a key accomplishment that helped shape the size and influence of his kingdom. These provinces were often fought over, so regaining them showed his military and political skill in stabilizing the kingdom's main areas.

However, Saw Zein couldn't recover all the lands his kingdom once held. The Tenasserim coast was still controlled by Sukhothai, the Tai kingdom that had once dominated Martaban. Failing to regain the coastline reduced Hanthawaddy's access to sea trade routes and was a strategic disadvantage throughout his reign. Both diplomatic and military attempts to remove Sukhothai from the region failed.

Saw Zein's rule ended violently in 1330 when Zein Pun, one of his top military leaders, staged a coup against him. Saw Zein was killed in Mottama, the city's kingdom capital. Although Zein Pun took over the throne right after, he was killed within a week, highlighting the intense instability of the political scene during Saw Zein's reign.

Before Fame

Saw Zein was born in 1303 in the Hanthawaddy Kingdom, the Mon-speaking area of Lower Burma. The early 1300s were a time of changing power in mainland Southeast Asia. The Pagan Empire had fallen after Mongol attacks at the end of the 1200s, leading to regional powers contending for control. Hanthawaddy was one of the states that formed in this power shift.

As a younger member of the ruling family, Saw Zein grew up with his older brother Saw O working to establish and defend the kingdom's independence. Saw Zein became king through succession rather than conquest. He took over a newly independent, but still unstable kingdom, requiring him to protect and build on what his predecessor had started.
