Biography

Sergei Viktorovich Lavrov, born in Moscow in 1950, is a Russian diplomat who's been the country's Foreign Minister since March 2004. His appointment by President Vladimir Putin began one of the longest terms for a foreign minister in modern times. Before this, Lavrov was Russia's Permanent Representative to the United Nations from 1994 to 2004, where he built a reputation as a skilled negotiator and strong defender of Russian interests globally.

Lavrov was educated at School No. 1414 and then attended the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), known for training Soviet and Russian diplomats. This education equipped him with language skills and a global perspective essential for his career. He speaks multiple languages, including English and French, which allows him to communicate directly with international counterparts without interpreters.

As Foreign Minister, Lavrov has been the key figure in shaping and speaking for Russian foreign policy during a time of significant global change. He has represented Russia through major international crises, such as the conflicts in Georgia, Ukraine, and Syria, and consistently pushes for what he calls a multipolar world order. His diplomatic style often stresses sovereignty and opposes Western interference in regional matters. Throughout his time as minister, he has insisted that Russia wants equal partnerships rather than subordinate relations with other world powers.

Lavrov has received numerous state honors from Russia and other countries. He was awarded the Order of Honour in 1996 and the Order 'For Merit to the Fatherland' in both 4th class (1998) and 3rd class (2005). He was also recognized as an Honored Worker of the Diplomatic Service of the Russian Federation in 2004. Internationally, he received the Grand Cross of the Order of the Sun of Peru in 2007 and various orders from former Soviet republics, highlighting his efforts in maintaining Russia's relationships across different regions.

Before Fame

Lavrov started his career during the last years of the Soviet Union, a time when the diplomatic service was changing as the country began to engage more with the world. He studied at MGIMO when Soviet foreign policy was becoming more global and less ideologically rigid than in earlier years.

Soviet-trained diplomats like Lavrov usually rose to prominence after years of work in various international positions and domestic roles in the foreign ministry. His group of diplomats came up during Gorbachev's glasnost and perestroika, when strong diplomatic skills were needed as the Soviet Union dealt with complex international relationships and internal changes.
