Biography
Sir Edward Seymour Hicks (30 January 1871 – 6 April 1949) was a British actor, playwright, music hall performer, actor-manager, and producer from Saint Helier, Jersey. He was a key figure in Edwardian theatre, known for his work on stage, in films, and in music halls. He's best known for playing Ebenezer Scrooge in Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol, a role he first took on in 1901 and performed thousands of times. He was married to the actress Ellaline Terriss, and they often worked together on stage. He was knighted for his contributions to British theatre.
Hicks started performing on stage at nine and began his professional career at sixteen, joining a theatrical company for a U.S. tour. He became famous in 1893 with his role in Under the Clock at the Royal Court Theatre, the first musical revue staged in London. This success caught the eye of impresario George Edwardes, leading to roles in The Shop Girl in 1894, followed by The Circus Girl (1896) and A Runaway Girl (1898), with Ellaline Terriss.
After marrying Terriss, Hicks worked with American producer Charles Frohman. They produced several successful shows, including the musical Bluebell in Fairyland (1901), Quality Street (1902), The Earl and the Girl (1903), and The Catch of the Season (1904). These hits allowed Hicks to build two London theatres: the Aldwych Theatre in 1905 and the Hicks Theatre (later the Globe Theatre) in 1906, which opened with The Beauty of Bath.
As time went on, Hicks shifted more towards music hall tours and comedy. He took part in the revue Pebbles on the Beach in 1912 and continued writing plays, with The Happy Day (1916) being one of his popular works. His film career started in 1913 with roles in Scrooge and David Garrick. Later, he appeared in films like The Lambeth Walk (1939), showing his lasting impact on entertainment into the sound era. Hicks passed away on 6 April 1949 in Hampshire, after a career that lasted over 60 years.
Before Fame
Seymour Hicks was born on January 30, 1871, in Saint Helier, Jersey, during a time when British theatre was undergoing major changes. The stage was moving away from strictly classical plays towards more commercially appealing entertainment like burlesque, musical theatre, and the rising trend of the music hall. Hicks first appeared on stage at nine, which wasn't unusual for children from theatrical families at that time.
By sixteen, he had moved on to professional work, joining a touring theatre company that allowed him to perform for audiences in both Britain and the United States. This transatlantic experience was important, helping him refine his performance skills and better understand what audiences wanted in entertainment. His early talent for comedy, singing, and physical acting prepared him well for the boom in musical theatre that would come to define the Edwardian stage.
