Biography
Dimitar Ivanov Berbatov, born on January 30, 1981, in Blagoevgrad, is a former Bulgarian professional footballer. Many consider him one of Bulgaria's best players ever. Known for his incredible technique, ball control, and calm finishing, Berbatov played as a striker. He started his career at his hometown club, Pirin, and moved to CSKA Sofia at 17 in 1998, where he won the Bulgarian Cup in 1999.
Berbatov's big break came when he joined German Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen in January 2001. Over five and a half years, he became one of Europe's top strikers and played in the 2002 UEFA Champions League Final, where Leverkusen lost 2-1 to Real Madrid. His success in Germany caught the eye of top English clubs, leading to his transfer to Tottenham Hotspur in July 2006 for a record fee for the club at that time.
While at Tottenham, Berbatov spent two strong seasons, contributing to the club's 2008 EFL Cup win by scoring the winning penalty in a 2-1 final against Chelsea. His sharp finishing and playmaking skills made him a feared striker in the Premier League, leading to a major transfer to Manchester United in 2008. During his four seasons there, he won two Premier League titles in 2008-09 and 2010-11, and was the Premier League's top scorer in 2010-11. He also played in his second Champions League final in 2009, although United lost 2-0 to Barcelona.
After leaving Manchester United, Berbatov played for Fulham, AS Monaco, PAOK, and Kerala Blasters, retiring in 2019. Internationally, he debuted for Bulgaria on November 17, 1999, at 18 and captained the national team from 2006 to 2010. He became Bulgaria's top scorer with 48 goals in 78 matches, a record he shares with Hristo Bonev. His only major tournament was Euro 2004, as Bulgaria didn't qualify for other big competitions during his time. He retired from international football in May 2010.
Before Fame
Berbatov grew up in Blagoevgrad, a city in southwestern Bulgaria near the borders with Greece and North Macedonia. He started playing football early on with his local team, Pirin Blagoevgrad. Even though Bulgaria didn't have the football facilities that Western European countries did, Berbatov's natural talent and skill quickly set him apart.
At 17, he made the important move to CSKA Sofia, one of Bulgaria's top clubs, in 1998. This shift from small-town football to the capital marked his first big step toward international fame. Within a year at CSKA Sofia, he won his first professional trophy, the Bulgarian Cup in 1999, and made his international debut for Bulgaria at just 18 years old, showing how fast he was climbing the ranks in Bulgarian football.
