Biography

Shawn Peter Raul Mendes was born on August 8, 1998, in Pickering, Ontario, Canada. He went to Pine Ridge Secondary School, but his music career soon took over his education plans. Mendes first got noticed in 2013 by posting six-second song covers on Vine, quickly gaining a large following that helped kickstart his professional music career. His social media activity caught the eye of artist manager Andrew Gertler and Island Records A&R representative Ziggy Chareton, leading to his first record deal in 2014.

Mendes released his self-titled debut EP in 2014, followed by his first studio album, Handwritten, in 2015. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200, making him one of the youngest artists to achieve this before turning 18. The lead single "Stitches" became a global hit, reaching number one in the UK and the top 10 in both the US and Canada. This success established Mendes as a strong presence in pop music and showed his ability to move from social media fame to mainstream success.

His next albums continued this pattern of success. Illuminate (2016) also debuted at number one in the US, with hit singles "Treat You Better" and "There's Nothing Holdin' Me Back," both reaching top 10 status in several countries. His third album, Shawn Mendes (2018), made him the third-youngest artist to have three consecutive number-one albums, with "In My Blood" as its lead single. In 2019, Mendes released "Señorita," a collaboration with Camila Cabello that reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100, marking his first number-one single as a lead artist.

Mendes kept breaking records with Wonder (2020), becoming the youngest male artist to top the Billboard 200 with four studio albums. After a break from music, he came back in November 2024 with his fifth album, Shawn, which took a different direction by exploring folk influences. While praised by critics, this album didn't match the commercial success of his earlier work. Throughout his career, Mendes has won numerous awards, including 13 SOCAN awards, 10 MTV Europe Music Awards, eight Juno Awards, and was named one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people in 2018.

Before Fame

Growing up in Pickering, Ontario, Mendes was inspired to learn guitar after watching YouTube tutorials, influenced by artists like Ed Sheeran and John Mayer. He taught himself by watching online videos and practicing covers of popular songs. His music journey began more by chance when he started posting six-second clips on Vine in 2013. This was initially a way to overcome shyness and connect with others who shared his musical interests.

Mendes's rise happened just as Vine became popular and social media was changing how artists could reach audiences without traditional industry gatekeepers. His regular posts and genuine musical talent helped him stand out from many aspiring musicians on the platform. Within months, he gained hundreds of thousands of followers and caught the industry's attention, creating a direct path to fame outside of the usual routes.
