Biography

Joël André Matip Job was born on August 8, 1991, in Bochum, Germany, to a Cameroonian father and a German mother. Although born and raised in Germany, Matip chose to play for Cameroon at the international level, debuting for the Indomitable Lions at just 18. This choice showed his strong ties to his African roots and shaped his international career. Matip kicked off his professional football journey with Schalke 04 in 2009 and quickly became a dependable center-back in the Bundesliga. Over his seven years with the German club, he was a key part of their defense, playing in 258 competitive matches and scoring 23 goals. During his time at Schalke, he helped the team win the DFB-Pokal and DFL-Supercup in 2011, showing his knack for performing well under pressure. In 2016, Matip made a big career move by joining Liverpool on a free transfer. Under manager Jürgen Klopp, he adjusted to the fast-paced style of English football and became crucial to Liverpool's defense. His partnership with Virgil van Dijk was one of the Premier League's top defensive duos. The highlight of his club career was in 2019 when he started in Liverpool's Champions League final win over Tottenham Hotspur, helping the club secure their sixth European Cup. This victory led to more trophies, including the UEFA Super Cup and Liverpool's first Premier League title in 30 years during the 2019-20 season. Matip's international career with Cameroon lasted five years and included participation in major tournaments. He played in the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations and two FIFA World Cups in 2010 and 2014. However, in 2015, he retired from international football due to various issues, including disputes with the Cameroonian Football Federation. This decision meant he missed Cameroon's winning 2017 Africa Cup of Nations campaign, but he stayed focused on his club role with Liverpool, continuing as a key defensive player for several more seasons.

Before Fame

Growing up in Bochum, Joël Matip was surrounded by German football culture. His father, Jean Matip, was a former Cameroonian footballer who had played professionally in Germany, giving Joël football knowledge and a strong connection to his African roots. This background later influenced his choice to play for Cameroon internationally, even though he was raised in Germany. Matip went through youth football in Germany and soon caught the attention of Schalke 04's scouts. He joined their youth academy, progressing through the ranks and showing the defensive skills and technical talent that became key in his career. This was also a time when German football was known for producing top-notch defenders, and the Bundesliga was getting more competitive.
