Biography

Lin Li-hui, better known as Shu Qi, was born on April 16, 1976, in Xindian District, Taiwan. She adopted her stage name early in her career and became a highly recognized actress in Chinese-language cinema, gaining fame in Hong Kong, Taiwan, mainland China, and internationally. Throughout her career, she has won four Hong Kong Film Awards, two Golden Horse Awards, and an Asian Film Award, while also being part of the main competition juries at the world's top three film festivals: Berlin, Cannes, and Venice.

Shu gained public attention with her role in Viva Erotica in 1996, a Hong Kong film that introduced her to audiences across the region. She went on to create a filmography that includes arthouse films, commercial hits, and international co-productions. Her work with Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien was a key creative partnership in her career, resulting in three films: Millennium Mambo (2001), Three Times (2005), and The Assassin (2015). She won the Golden Horse Award for Best Leading Actress for Three Times in 2005 and received the Asian Film Award for Best Actress for The Assassin in 2016, solidifying her reputation as a top screen performer of her generation.

Aside from her work with Hou, Shu has shown a wide range of talent across different genres and film scales. She appeared in the Hollywood action movie The Transporter (2002), gaining recognition with Western audiences. In mainland China, she starred in successful films like the romantic comedy If You Are the One (2008), A Beautiful Life (2011), the fantasy adventure Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons (2013) directed by Stephen Chow, and Gone with the Bullets (2014). These films collectively made hundreds of millions at the Chinese box office, proving her to be a bankable star in the world's largest film market.

Shu married Hong Kong actor and filmmaker Stephen Fung, and the two have maintained successful careers in the film industry. Besides acting, she has also taken on directing. Her first feature film, Girl, premiered in competition at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival in 2025, making her one of the few Asian actresses to become a director at such a level of international recognition. Her rankings on the Forbes China Celebrity 100 list throughout the 2010s, peaking at 18th in 2013, showed her ongoing commercial and cultural success in a competitive entertainment market.

Before Fame

Shu Qi grew up in Xindian District, a suburb in the New Taipei area of Taiwan, during a time when the economy was booming, and there was a lot of cultural exchange between Taiwan, Hong Kong, and the broader Chinese-speaking world. She moved to Hong Kong as a young woman and started her modeling and entertainment career in the mid-1990s, a period when Hong Kong's film and fashion industries were thriving.

In her early career, she did modeling work and appeared in Category III films, a genre in Hong Kong cinema that allowed adult content. Her role in Viva Erotica (1996) gained her wider public attention and marked the start of a shift towards more mainstream and critically acclaimed projects. Her screen presence and natural charisma caught the eye of directors, leading to more significant roles and collaborations with celebrated well-known directors.
