Biography

Sushil Prasad Koirala was born on August 12, 1939, in Biratnagar, Nepal, into a politically engaged family. He became a key figure in the Nepali Congress party, eventually leading both the party and the country. His political career spanned decades during which Nepal saw major changes, moving from an absolute monarchy to a federal democratic republic. Koirala passed away on February 9, 2016, in Kathmandu, leaving behind a legacy of dedication to democratic values and constitutional governance.

Koirala was Prime Minister of Nepal from February 11, 2014, to October 10, 2015, during a critical time in Nepal's history. During his term, Nepal introduced a new constitution on September 20, 2015, officially becoming a federal democratic republic. The constitution-making process was long and difficult, involving many governments and assemblies, and its completion under Koirala's leadership was a significant achievement in his political career.

As President of the Nepali Congress from 2010 to 2016, Koirala led the party through a challenging time that included earthquake disasters, political stalemates, and tough negotiations on the new constitution. He was known for his patient, consensus-driven political style, which helped him manage coalitions in a divided parliament. He was also recognized for his simple lifestyle, reportedly living modestly even as the country's leader.

Koirala's time as Prime Minister was also marked by the devastating earthquakes in April and May 2015, which killed nearly nine thousand people and left hundreds of thousands homeless. His government's response to the disaster faced criticism, particularly regarding the speed of relief efforts and reconstruction planning. Despite these challenges, his administration moved forward with finalizing the constitution, a task that had long escaped Nepali politicians.

He stepped down as Prime Minister in October 2015, following the adoption of the new constitution and due to pressures from coalition shifts and political changes. He continued as the president of the Nepali Congress until his death in February 2016. Koirala is remembered as someone who upheld democratic principles during times when they were often challenged in Nepal, and who guided his party and country through one of the most significant constitutional changes in Nepal's history.

Before Fame

Sushil Koirala grew up in Biratnagar when Nepal was under an absolute monarchy, first with the Rana oligarchy and later under direct royal rule. During this time, political parties were often banned or suppressed, and being a member of the Nepali Congress could be risky. Koirala joined the party at a young age and faced periods of political exile and hardship, like many opposition figures of his time.

His journey to national prominence was slow and steady, built over decades through his work within the Nepali Congress rather than a sudden rise. He held various roles within the party over the years, earning a reputation for being reliable and ideologically consistent. By the time multiparty democracy was restored in Nepal in 1990, Koirala was an experienced party member, though he only reached the peak of political power much later in his career.
