Biography
Tamás Nádasdy de Nádasd et Fogarasföld, known as the Great Palatine, was born in 1498 in Egervár, Hungary. Coming from the lesser Hungarian nobility, he became one of the most powerful magnates and statesmen in sixteenth-century Hungary. He acquired vast lands and reached the highest offices under the Hungarian crown. His career developed during a turbulent time in Hungarian history, marked by the 1526 defeat at the Battle of Mohács and the kingdom's division between the Habsburgs and the Ottoman Empire.
Before Fame
Tamás Nádasdy grew up in Hungary during a time when Ottoman expansion was a growing threat. He spent his early years gaining the education and military experience needed to progress in the unstable political climate of the early 1500s. He joined royal service and showed both military skill and diplomatic ability, which helped him manage the risky political divisions among Hungarian nobles after the disaster at Mohács. His loyalty and effectiveness caught the attention of the Habsburg court, paving the way for his eventual rise to the highest offices of the realm.
