Biography
Æthelwealh was the king of the South Saxons during the seventh century, a time of significant change in English history. He started his reign before 674 and ruled until he was killed between 680 and 685. His time as king coincided with the spread of Christianity in Anglo-Saxon England. According to the Venerable Bede's "Ecclesiastical History of the English People," Æthelwealh was the first Christian king of Sussex, having been baptized in Mercia, marking a major religious change in his kingdom. The South Saxon kingdom during his rule covered much of what is now Sussex and probably parts of Surrey and Kent. His conversion to Christianity was part of the political and religious alliances common between Anglo-Saxon kingdoms at the time. Æthelwealh was married to Eafe, but not much is known about their relationship or any children they might have had. His reign ended violently when Cædwalla, a West Saxon prince, killed him as part of Cædwalla's efforts to gain power in the area. This attack was part of Cædwalla's campaign to control southern England, which eventually led to his becoming king of Wessex. Æthelwealh's death not only ended his rule but also led to instability in the South Saxon kingdom, which came under West Saxon control after Cædwalla's conquest.
Before Fame
Little is known about Æthelwealh's early life or how he became the ruler of the South Saxons. He likely inherited his position through royal lineage, as was typical in Anglo-Saxon kingdoms during the seventh century. The South Saxon kingdom had been founded during the early Anglo-Saxon settlement in Britain and by Æthelwealh's time, it was a stable political entity with clear borders and governance. His journey to Mercia for baptism suggests there were diplomatic ties between the South Saxon and Mercian courts, showing he was already involved in the complicated inter-kingdom politics of this time in English history.
