Biography
Thibaut Nicolas Marc Courtois was born on May 11, 1992, in Bree, Belgium. He started his professional football career with the Belgian club Genk, making his senior debut in 2009 at just 16 years old. Even at a young age, Courtois quickly became the club's main goalkeeper and helped Genk win the Belgian Pro League. His impressive performances led to major European clubs taking notice, resulting in his transfer to Chelsea in 2011 for around £8 million.
Instead of joining Chelsea's first team right away, Courtois was loaned to Atlético Madrid in Spain for three seasons, which were crucial for his growth. While at Madrid, he won major trophies including La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Europa League. He also played a key role in Atlético reaching the UEFA Champions League final, proving himself as one of Europe's top young goalkeepers.
Courtois returned to Chelsea in 2014 and became the club's main goalkeeper. During his time there, he won two Premier League titles and the EFL Cup. In 2017, he received the Premier League Golden Glove for his excellent performances. However, his relationship with Chelsea soured, and in 2018 he moved to Real Madrid for about £35 million, making him the most expensive goalkeeper in La Liga at that time.
At Real Madrid, Courtois has kept performing at the top level, winning three La Liga titles and two UEFA Champions League trophies. His consistent excellence earned him the Ricardo Zamora Trophy three times for having the best goals-to-games ratio in La Liga. In 2018, he was named The Best FIFA Goalkeeper, solidifying his place among the world's top players in his position.
Internationally, Courtois debuted for Belgium in 2011 at 19, becoming their youngest senior international goalkeeper. He has since earned over 100 caps, ranking eighth in Belgium's history for appearances. His standout moment in international play came at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, where he won the Golden Glove as the tournament's best goalkeeper, helping Belgium secure their best-ever World Cup finish at third place. He was also named Belgian Sportsman of the Year in 2014 for his contribution to Belgian sports.
Before Fame
Courtois grew up in Bree, a small town in eastern Belgium, where he showed early talent as a goalkeeper in local youth football. His impressive height and natural reflexes made him notable from a young age, leading to his recruitment by Genk's youth academy. The club's belief in young talent helped Courtois advance quickly through their system, and he made his professional debut while still a teenager.
The early 2000s and 2010s were a great time for Belgian football, with a wave of exceptional players coming up together. This was bolstered by major investment in youth development programs and coaching facilities across Belgium. Courtois benefited from this improved system, which focused on technical skills and allowed young players to enter professional football earlier than before.
