Biography
Thomas Alexander Peterkin (1839 – 12 June 1926) was a British-born engineer and politician in New Zealand, best known as the mayor of Lower Hutt. He was born in Islington, London, in 1839, and attended Aylesbury Grammar School. After school, he trained with the London and North Western Railway, a major and advanced railway company in Victorian Britain. This engineering background provided him with a strong base in infrastructure and civil works, which shaped his career in the Southern Hemisphere.
Before Fame
Peterkin grew up in Islington during the mid-Victorian era, a time of massive industrial and technological growth in Britain. He got a solid education at Aylesbury Grammar School, and his training with the London and North Western Railway put him in the middle of Britain's railway boom. Working for one of England's top railway operators likely exposed him to the latest in civil and mechanical engineering.
