Biography
Ulf Hjalmar Kristersson was born on December 29, 1963, in Lund Cathedral parish, Sweden. He went to Uppsala University, one of Scandinavia's top schools, where he built the foundation for his future political career. He started in politics early by leading the Moderate Youth League from 1988 to 1992, showing ambition and organizational skills that would help him rise in Sweden's center-right political circles. He joined the Riksdag in 1991, representing Stockholm County, holding that position until 2000.
Kristersson returned to the Riksdag in 2014, this time representing Södermanland County, which he continues to represent. From 2010 to 2014, he served as Minister for Social Security in Fredrik Reinfeldt's government, gaining important experience in a crucial policy area. After the Moderate Party faced election losses and party leader Anna Kinberg Batra resigned, Kristersson was elected to lead the Moderate Party on October 1, 2017. He also became shadow Finance Minister and economic policy spokesperson in December 2014, guiding the party's strategy during a period of social democratic rule.
As party leader, Kristersson made a key decision to formally work with the Sweden Democrats, a nationalist party that had been isolated by mainstream right parties in Sweden.
