Biography

Vazgen Zaveni Sargsyan was an Armenian military leader, politician, and writer who played a key role in Armenia's move to independence and the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. He was born on March 5, 1959, in Ararat, Armenia, and studied at the Armenian State Institute of Physical Culture and Sport. He became one of the most important figures in modern Armenian history, with his career covering the crucial times of Armenia's independence from the Soviet Union and the conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh.

Sargsyan rose to prominence in the late 1980s as part of the movement for the unification of Nagorno-Karabakh with Armenia. He led Armenian volunteer groups during early clashes with Azerbaijani forces, showing leadership qualities that defined his career. After Armenia's independence in 1991, President Levon Ter-Petrosyan made him the first Defense Minister, a role he held from 1991-1992 and again from 1995-1999. During the First Nagorno-Karabakh War, Sargsyan was the main Armenian military commander, directing operations that led to Armenian control over Nagorno-Karabakh and surrounding areas by the time a ceasefire was reached in 1994.

After the war, Sargsyan strengthened his control over Armenia's armed forces, becoming a major political figure. Initially, he supported President Ter-Petrosyan but later opposed his willingness to compromise in Nagorno-Karabakh peace talks. In 1998, Sargsyan helped remove Ter-Petrosyan from office and supported Robert Kocharyan’s presidential campaign. However, his relationship with Kocharyan later soured, and Sargsyan formed an alliance with former communist leader Karen Demirchyan.

This political shift culminated in the May 1999 parliamentary elections, where his alliance with Demirchyan won a majority in the National Assembly. He combined the war veterans group Yerkrapah with the Republican Party, boosting his political standing. On June 11, 1999, he became Prime Minister, effectively controlling Armenia's military and legislative branches. His career was abruptly ended on October 27, 1999, when he was assassinated along with Karen Demirchyan and six others during the Armenian parliament shooting in Yerevan. His death marked the end of a career that had shaped Armenia's early independence period and military strength.

Before Fame

Vazgen Sargsyan grew up in Ararat, Armenia, during the Soviet era when Armenian national awareness was slowly reviving after years of Soviet rule. His education at the Armenian State Institute of Physical Culture and Sport gave him organizational and leadership skills that would later be useful in military situations. In the late 1980s, political changes swept through the Soviet Union under Mikhail Gorbachev's policies of glasnost and perestroika, allowing ethnic movements to rise.

The Nagorno-Karabakh movement started in 1988, with demands for the mainly Armenian region to move from Azerbaijan to Armenia, which became the main focus of Sargsyan's early career. As tensions turned into armed clashes, Sargsyan stood out among other activists by organizing volunteer fighters and coordinating military operations, which led to his later role as Defense Minister in newly independent Armenia.
