Biography
Wataru Endō, born on February 9, 1993, in Yokohama, Japan, is one of Japan's top defensive midfielders. He is the captain of Liverpool FC in the Premier League and the Japan national team. His career started in Japanese football and moved through European leagues before reaching the top of English football.
Endō began his professional career with Shonan Bellmare in the J1 League, becoming a solid defensive midfielder. In 2016, he moved to Urawa Red Diamonds, which was a turning point in his career. He helped Urawa win the league title and the 2017 AFC Champions League, proving himself at the highest level in Asia.
Wanting to challenge himself in Europe, Endō joined Belgian Pro League club Sint-Truiden in 2018. He then moved to Bundesliga team VfB Stuttgart on loan in 2019, a deal made permanent in April 2020. In Germany, he grew into a leader, eventually becoming captain in his final season with Stuttgart. His time in the Bundesliga showed he could compete at a high level in Europe.
In August 2023, Endō made a major move to Liverpool FC, joining one of the Premier League's top clubs. This step was significant in his career, making him one of the few Japanese players to regularly play at such a high level in English football. At Liverpool, he continues to show the defensive skills and leadership that have defined his career.
Internationally, Endō debuted for the Japan national team in 2015 and has played over 70 games. He has competed in two FIFA World Cups and two AFC Asian Cups, becoming a key part of Japan's team. In June 2023, he became the captain of the national team, highlighting his role as one of Japan's most respected and experienced players.
Before Fame
Growing up in Yokohama, one of Japan's major port cities, Endō was part of a generation of Japanese footballers who benefited from the country's improving youth development programs. The J-League, started in 1993, the same year he was born, began to make Japanese football more professional, allowing young players to develop their skills at home before possibly moving abroad.
Endō's early career happened when Japanese football was gaining international attention, especially after co-hosting the 2002 FIFA World Cup. During this time, there was more investment in youth academies and training facilities, giving players like Endō better chances to develop their technical and tactical skills from a young age.
