Biography
Born in 1978 in Gardez District, Paktia Province, Afghanistan, Zabihullah Mujahid is the chief spokesman for the Taliban, known as the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. He became the Deputy Minister of Information and Culture on 7 September 2021, and officially took on the role of chief spokesman on 25 October 2021. Mujahid also speaks directly for Supreme Leader Hibatullah Akhundzada, making him key in the Taliban government's communications.
Mujahid was appointed as a Taliban spokesman in January 2007, after his predecessor Muhammad Hanif was arrested. For more than ten years, he worked alongside other spokesmen like Suhail Shaheen and Yousef Ahmadi. In this setup, Mujahid concentrated on Taliban activities in eastern, northern, and central Afghanistan, while Ahmadi dealt with the western and southern parts, ensuring consistent messaging across the group's spread-out insurgency.
For most of his time as a spokesman, Mujahid was completely anonymous, using only cellphone calls, text messages, emails, postings on Islamist websites, and later Twitter to communicate with journalists and the public. His identity remained hidden for years, aligning with the secretive nature of Taliban operations during that time. This changed on 17 August 2021, when Mujahid appeared publicly for the first time at a press conference, revealing his identity to the world, just two days after the Taliban took Kabul.
After the Taliban took over Afghanistan in August 2021, Mujahid moved from being an insurgent spokesman to a top official in the government. His press conferences became the main way for the Taliban to share their policies on governance, foreign relations, women's rights restrictions, and security issues with both the local and global audience.
