Strategic Narrative Overview
Beginning on 4 August 2022, the People's Liberation Army conducted exercises across seven zones surrounding Taiwan's most critical international shipping lanes and air routes, launching ballistic missiles that flew over Taiwan and deploying naval and air forces in an unprecedented encirclement. On 8 August China announced a second round of exercises. The drills demonstrated a theoretical capability to impose a complete naval blockade of the island and were part of what analysts termed the Fourth Taiwan Strait Crisis.
01 / The Origins
Tensions in the Taiwan Strait escalated sharply when United States House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan in August 2022, the highest-ranking American official to do so in 25 years. The People's Republic of China, which regards Taiwan as a breakaway province, objected strongly to what it characterized as US interference in internal Chinese affairs, and announced large-scale live-fire military exercises encircling the island in direct response.
03 / The Outcome
China officially announced the end of the initial exercises on 10 August 2022, but declared that regular PLA patrols in the Taiwan Strait would continue. No military exchange of fire occurred. The exercises established a new operational norm, with subsequent Chinese military drills conducted around Taiwan in the following years, maintaining sustained pressure on Taipei and its international backers while the broader crisis remained unresolved.
