Strategic Narrative Overview
Israel conducted 147 airstrikes over three days, opening with the targeted killing of PIJ military commander Tayseer al-Jabari. PIJ responded with approximately 1,100 rockets aimed at Israeli towns. On 6 August, PIJ's southern Gaza commander Khaled Mansour was also killed in a strike. Israeli arrests of PIJ members in the West Bank continued in parallel. Around 20 percent of PIJ rockets fell short, landing inside Gaza and causing civilian casualties disputed by both sides.
01 / The Origins
Tensions escalated after Israeli forces raided Jenin in the occupied West Bank and arrested Bassam al-Saadi, a senior Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) leader. Israel, concerned about imminent PIJ retaliation, launched preemptive strikes on 5 August 2022. The operation, code-named Breaking Dawn, was ordered by Prime Minister Yair Lapid and Defense Minister Benny Gantz without prior Cabinet approval, targeting PIJ military infrastructure and leadership in the Gaza Strip.
03 / The Outcome
A ceasefire brokered on the night of 7 August 2022 was confirmed by both sides, ending three days of fighting. At least 49 Palestinians died, including 17 children; Israel attributed 14 civilian deaths, including 7 children, to misfired PIJ rockets. No Israeli fatalities from rocket fire were reported. The truce restored a fragile calm without altering the underlying political or territorial situation in Gaza.
