Strategic Narrative Overview

Russian forces succeeded in capturing Hostomel airport in the opening days of the invasion, but Ukrainian resistance prevented them from using it as a functioning airbridge. Fighting intensified across Hostomel, Bucha, and Irpin as Ukrainian forces contested Russian advances. The expected rapid political collapse of Ukraine did not materialise, and Russian ground forces proved insufficient in strength to take a city the size of Kyiv against organised defence.

01 / The Origins

As part of Russia's February 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Russian forces launched an offensive aimed at rapidly capturing Kyiv and collapsing Ukrainian command and control. Hostomel, located northwest of the capital, was targeted alongside Bucha and Irpin to encircle Kyiv from the west. Control of Hostomel's airport was essential to Russia's plan to establish an air corridor for troop and supply transfers directly into the capital's outskirts.

03 / The Outcome

Having failed to achieve their operational objectives around Kyiv, Russian forces withdrew from Hostomel and the entirety of Kyiv Oblast in early April 2022, describing the pullback as a goodwill gesture. The Kyiv Oblast State Administration later identified Hostomel among the most affected areas. The Russian failure at Hostomel is considered a turning point that denied Moscow a swift decapitation of the Ukrainian state.
