Strategic Narrative Overview
Russian forces launched an assault on Sievierodonetsk in May 2022, engaging Ukrainian defenders in fierce urban combat. After weeks of fighting, Ukrainian forces withdrew from Sievierodonetsk in late June. Russian troops then crossed the Donets River to attack Lysychansk, the final Ukrainian-held city in the oblast, pressing their offensive through early July 2022.
01 / The Origins
By May 2022, Lysychansk and its twin city Sievierodonetsk were the last two major cities in Luhansk Oblast under Ukrainian control. As part of Russia's broader eastern Ukraine campaign during the Russo-Ukrainian War, Russian forces and the Luhansk People's Republic sought to complete their seizure of the oblast, making these cities strategic objectives of high importance.
03 / The Outcome
Russia and the LPR announced the capture of Lysychansk on 2–3 July 2022. Ukraine initially denied the loss but its general staff conceded on 3 July that forces had withdrawn to preserve the lives of defenders. The fall of Lysychansk allowed Russia to claim full control of Luhansk Oblast, a stated war aim.
