Strategic Narrative Overview
Russia launched artillery assaults on Soledar and surrounding villages from 3 August 2022, with repeated ground assaults continuing through October, many repelled by Ukrainian defenders. By late December 2022, the town lay largely in ruins. Direct assaults resumed in late December and escalated into January 2023, with Russian forces gradually overwhelming Ukrainian positions in the industrial zone and pushing through the settlement's remaining defensive lines.
01 / The Origins
Soledar, a small urban settlement in the Donetsk region of Ukraine, became a contested position during Russia's broader 2022 invasion of Ukraine. As Russian forces pursued control of the Donbas, Soledar emerged as a strategically significant satellite position northeast of Bakhmut, whose capture would allow Russian forces to threaten Bakhmut's supply lines and outskirts and advance their objective of seizing the entire Donetsk oblast.
03 / The Outcome
On 16 January 2023, Russian forces secured the last sector of Soledar's industrial zone and took full control of the town. The capture allowed Russia to directly threaten Bakhmut's northern and northeastern outskirts and tighten pressure on Ukrainian supply routes into Bakhmut. Ukrainian forces withdrew from the ruins, and fighting in the wider Bakhmut area intensified in the weeks that followed.
