Strategic Narrative Overview
On 7 December 2024, opposition forces entered the Rif Dimashq region and closed to within 20 kilometres of Damascus. The Syrian Army withdrew from multiple positions on the capital's outskirts. Simultaneously, rebel groups opened additional fronts in Homs and approached Damascus from the southeast. By 8 December, rebel forces had entered the Barzeh neighborhood of Damascus, effectively encircling and penetrating the capital with little organised resistance from government forces.
01 / The Origins
The fall of Damascus occurred within the broader context of the Syrian civil war that began in 2011. By late 2024, Syrian opposition forces coordinated a major offensive against the Assad government. The Southern Operations Room, aligned with the Military Operations Command, advanced from the south into the Rif Dimashq region, while Tahrir al-Sham and the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army pushed into Homs from the north, and the Syrian Free Army moved from the southeast.
03 / The Outcome
President Bashar al-Assad departed Damascus by air on or around 8 December 2024, flying to Moscow where Russia granted him asylum, marking the collapse of his government. State Russian media and video footage confirmed his departure. The fall ended over five decades of Assad family rule in Syria. The immediate political and humanitarian aftermath remained uncertain, with various opposition factions holding different parts of the country.
