Strategic Narrative Overview
The blockade intensified when rebels evicted villagers from surrounding territories, driving refugees into Djibo and swelling the encircled population. Insurgents attacked local infrastructure, blocked exit routes, and ambushed government supply convoys. Burkinabé security forces managed occasional resupply runs, but conditions deteriorated steadily. Negotiations between government officials and insurgents aimed at a peaceful resolution collapsed after pro-government militias undermined the talks.
01 / The Origins
Djibo, situated in northern Burkina Faso, lies at the heart of the Jihadist insurgency that began in 2015 and expanded across the Sahel. As armed Islamist factions gradually extended their control over surrounding rural areas through attacks and intimidation, the city became increasingly cut off from the rest of the country. By early 2022, insurgents had sufficiently encircled the region to mount a systematic blockade.
03 / The Outcome
By early 2023, the siege had tightened to the point that Djibo depended primarily on airlifts for essential supplies. The broader outcome remained unresolved, with the population enduring severe food insecurity and humanitarian hardship. No formal ceasefire or relief agreement had been reached, and the blockade continued as part of the wider, unresolved Jihadist insurgency across Burkina Faso.
