The 1961 United States Grand Prix was the eighth and final round of the 1961 World Championship of Drivers, held at Watkins Glen. Innes Ireland started from eighth on the grid, while Stirling Moss ran competitively at the front until his Lotus suffered an engine failure, opening the door for Ireland to assume the lead.
On October 8, 1961, Innes Ireland drove for Team Lotus at Watkins Glen, taking the lead after Stirling Moss retired with engine failure. Ireland held off American driver Dan Gurney to claim victory by 4.3 seconds, completing the season-ending race at the New York circuit.
The victory proved to be the only Formula One win of Innes Ireland's career. It also marked the first Grand Prix victory for Colin Chapman's Team Lotus, a milestone that launched the team on a path to becoming one of the most successful constructors in Formula One history. Watkins Glen subsequently hosted the United States Grand Prix every year until 1980.
