The 1986 Formula One World Championship brought the field to Montreal's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve for the sixth round of the season. Nigel Mansell had qualified on pole position, setting up a strong starting position for the Williams-Honda team against championship rivals including Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna.
On 15 June 1986, Nigel Mansell led from pole to win the 69-lap race. Alain Prost finished second in his McLaren-TAG and Nelson Piquet took third, while Ayrton Senna came fifth in his Lotus-Renault. The result left Prost two points ahead of Mansell in the Drivers' Championship standings.
Following a sponsorship dispute, the Canadian Grand Prix was not held in 1987. When it returned in 1988, the circuit had been substantially rebuilt with a new pit complex, a new start/finish straight near the Epingle de L'ile Hairpin, and one fewer corner (18 instead of 19), adding 20 metres of track length.
