Alain Prost took pole position and led the opening 30 laps of the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps, appearing set for victory. However, a slow pit stop cost him track position, dropping him behind both Damon Hill and Michael Schumacher and setting up a dramatic final result.
The 44-lap race on 29 August 1993 was ultimately won by Damon Hill in a Williams-Renault, with Schumacher's Benetton-Ford finishing 3.6 seconds behind in second and Prost recovering to third, a further 11 seconds back. Alessandro Zanardi was withdrawn after a serious Friday practice crash, and Thierry Boutsen retired on lap one.
Hill's victory gave Williams a 1–3 finish that clinched their second consecutive Constructors' Championship. Johnny Herbert's fifth place delivered the last points ever scored by Team Lotus, and Thierry Boutsen retired from Formula One following the race.
