FINA sought to create a dedicated world championship for short course (25-meter) pool swimming, which had lacked its own global title event despite widespread use in national competitions. This led to the organization of the first edition in 1993.
The 1st Short Course Swimming World Championships were held in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, from December 2–5, 1993. China dominated the women's events with ten victories, while the USA and Australia each won three men's events. A total of 12 world records were set during the meet.
China's sweep of women's events, led by Le Jingyi and Dai Guohong, signaled the country's emergence as a dominant force in international swimming. The championships established a recurring global platform for short course competition, with some nations such as Belgium and Moldova earning their only Short Course Worlds medals at this inaugural edition.
