The 1993 Formula One World Championship reached its penultimate rounds with Alain Prost needing only a points finish to clinch the title. Damon Hill, despite taking pole position, stalled on the dummy grid and was forced to start from the back of the field.
The 71-lap race at Estoril on 26 September 1993 was won by Michael Schumacher driving a Benetton-Ford. Alain Prost finished second in his Williams-Renault, with teammate Damon Hill recovering from the back to finish third. The result confirmed Prost as the 1993 Drivers' Champion.
Prost's second place locked in his record-equalling fourth Drivers' Championship. BMS Scuderia Italia withdrew from the championship after this race, ending Lola's Formula One involvement as a chassis supplier until a failed attempt to qualify at the 1997 Australian Grand Prix, making this the last race in which a Lola chassis actually started.
