Marseille qualified for the 1993 UEFA Champions League final after progressing through the second-ever Champions League group stage. Their opponents, AC Milan, were among Europe's dominant clubs of the era, though hampered by injuries to key players including Dutch forward Marco van Basten.
On 26 May 1993, Olympique de Marseille faced AC Milan at the Olympiastadion in Munich. Ivorian-born defender Basile Boli headed home the only goal in the 43rd minute, giving Marseille a 1–0 victory and their first and only European Cup title, making them the first French club to achieve the feat.
Marseille's triumph was overshadowed by a match-fixing scandal involving a domestic league fixture against Valenciennes, leading to their relegation to Division 2 and a ban from European competition. Marco van Basten, substituted in the 86th minute, never played professionally again, retiring in August 1995 after failed attempts at recovery.
