The 1997 Formula One World Championship returned to Austria for the first time since 1987, using the newly built A1-Ring. With just four races remaining, Jacques Villeneuve trailed Michael Schumacher in the Drivers' Championship, making every result critical to both title contenders.
Villeneuve started from pole and won the 71-lap race at the A1-Ring on 21 September 1997. Jarno Trulli led for much of the first half in a Prost-Mugen-Honda before retiring with engine failure. David Coulthard finished second for McLaren-Mercedes, with Heinz-Harald Frentzen third. Schumacher could manage only sixth in his Ferrari.
Villeneuve's win, combined with Schumacher's poor sixth-place finish, reduced Schumacher's championship lead to a single point with three races remaining. This set the stage for one of the most dramatic title showdowns in Formula One history, ultimately resolved at the final race in Jerez.
